Roses Are Dead

Poetry inspired by both the experiences and posts of some much valued friends.

With thanks to Denx Arman for use of the header image (licensing).

There was a moment of clarity
As a break in heavy overcast clouds
The Sun shining through
Illuminating
She saw the truth
The futility of it all
The arguments and petty
Point scoring
Ego fuelling cries for help
Straight from the heart
Of a soap opera
In the middle of all this
Insanity
Wars raging
Bombs falling
Mass raping
Even in the happy homes
The planet almost at its end
And nobody really caring
Because of well what
God;
Or due to knowing
Theirs is coming first?
She reached for the cigarette
Packet on the table
Pulled out a smoke
Wondering if it was all for nothing
Placed it between her lips
Found a flame
Suddenly floating before it
Her eyes moved to the source
And started into the abyss
Known as a man in a suit
With one of those smiles that spoke
More than a thousand words
That no self-respecting ever wanted to hear
Did he work there
Or was he just passing?
She didn’t care
Just took the cigarette
From her lips
And blew the light out
The smile the man
Had possessed
Disappearing as sharply
Though such were her eyes
And the new knowledge
Radiating from them
That even an empty ravine as he
Couldn’t help but feel their heat
And leave as hastily as the fire
He’d held before her breath
Not even a hint of the usual
Derogatory comment
So prevalent in the species
She waited a moment
Eyes slid downward in the direction
Of the departure before
Lighting the cigarette
Taking a deep breath
Wondering again
Was it all for nothing?
While looking at the men in her field of vision
Through the smoke of the exhale
Knowing with absolute conviction and clarity
Despite the grey fog
Having learned the hard way
That given the slightest chance
They’d have it all for them
And that really would be for nothing
She stubbed the cigarette
Realising the sort of people who profit
From that industry
It would be whatever she made it
In her short amount of time here

Thanks for reading 🙂
